Generally, in California and many other states, employment is “at will” which means that both the employer and employee can end the employment relationship at any time for any reason. Across the United States, employers are not permitted to terminate employees or pass them over for promotions for unlawful reasons described in the Age Discrimination and Employment Act and Americans with Disabilities Act.
